Pickets throughout Dublin over electrical contractor 'paying €3.50 less than standard wage'

A picket will start outside Cherry Orchard Hospital in Dublin this morning following a dispute with an electrical contractor.

The Technical Electrical and Engineering Union mounted pickets outside St. James' hospital last week over what they described as the failure of a contractor to meet industry norms.

They say some companies are paying €3.50 an hour less than the standard wage for these jobs.

National secretary for the construction sector of the TEEU, Brian Nolan, says the picket will expand from this morning.

He said: "We expect the pickets will be placed on a number of other sites throughout Dublin, starting with Cherry Orchard Hospital.

"It comes from a dispute with an electrical contractor's failure to provide terms and conditions in keeping with the industry norms and the industry agreements, especially with it being a publicly funded project, it's a very contentious subject."
