Met Éireann issue rain alert as Croagh Patrick pilgrimage cancelled

Met Éireann have issued a rainfall weather warning for Ireland.

The yellow weather alert is in place until at least 3pm with totals of 25 to 35 millimetres of rainfall expected in many areas.

Meanwhile Gardaí say "Reek Sunday", the annual pilgrimage at Croagh Patrick, has been cancelled as a result of the adverse weather conditions.

Up to 20,000 people were expected to make the traditional pilgrimage Co. Mayo this morning.

"A very active weather system pushed into the south-west late yesterday evening," said Eoin Sherlock from Met Éireann. "It pushed up north-eastwards across the country."

"We get some very heavy falls - some places had over 20mm of rain, getting towards an inch of rain. It's very poor conditions, [and] very wet."
