Irish Film Board to become 'Screen Ireland'

The Irish Film Board is to undergo a name change, to become 'Screen Ireland'.

The Minister for Arts Heather Humphreys TD will be putting legislation in place to change the name of the organisation to reflect its broader remit as promoter of the Irish film, television and animation sector.

The change will happen as part of an amendment to the National Cultural Institutions (National Concert Hall) Bill 2015, which is now making its way through the legislative process.

"The Irish Film Board is our premier agency for promoting and supporting the audio visual sector," the Minister said. "Its work extends far beyond the traditional realm of ‘film’ and encompasses the domestic and international TV sector, as well as our growing animation sector.

"The Irish audio visual sector has been going from strength to strength in recent years
I want the agency tasked with expanding the sector further to have a name that easily communicates its responsibilities”.

The acting chair of the Film Board, Annie Doona, welcomed the proposal, citing a "new phase in the development of the agency".
