Court grants RTÉ permission to broadcast all but two paragraphs of report on Denis O'Brien

The High Court has given RTÉ permission to broadcast all but two paragraphs in the script of a report on Denis O'Brien's banking arrangements with IBRC.

The bank's lawyers pushed for the redactions in the proposed report by RTÉ business editor David Murphy on the basis that the information derived from privileged legal advice received by IBRC.

They disputed assertions that one of the redacted paragraphs, relating to the bank's views on Denis O'Brien's loan requests, could have been inferred from comments made by Sinn Féin's Pearse Doherty in the Dáil.

Mr Doherty claimed the businessman had a €315m from IBRC extended in late 2013, after the bank went into liquidation.

Yesterday, Mr O'Brien initiated separate legal proceedings against the houses of the Oireachtas and the State over Dáil comments made about his finances.

In light of an injunction stopping his confidential banking affairs going public, his lawyers said Mr O'Brien wants to establish the "correct demarcation between the role of the Oireachtas and the courts".
