Man convicted of Shane Geoghegan murder to hear appeal decision

The man in jail for shooting rugby player Shane Geoghegan in Limerick nearly seven years ago is due to find out today if he has won an appeal against his murder conviction.

Barry Doyle of Portland Row in Dublin is serving a mandatory life sentence.

Barry Doyle was arrested and confessed to the shooting before being convicted of murder at the Central Criminal Court in 2012.

However, on appeal his lawyers claimed that Gardaí had induced him into making admissions.

It was argued that Gardaí used his partner Victoria Gunnery and their child with a hole in his heart as tools of psychological oppression.

This, they said, was done by Gardaí telling Mr Doyle that his partner was also in custody and therefore away from their sick child because of him.

The Court of Appeal is due to rule on the case today.
