Report shows Irish teens among highest for time doing homework

Irish teens spend more time doing homework than most of their counterparts in developed countries.

A report by the OECD found that 15 year olds here reported doing more than seven hours a week on average, that compares to most OECD countries where the average is five hours.

Other countries with students doing the same amount of homework as Irish students were Italy, Romania, Russia and Singapore.

In comparison, students in Shanghai in China spent twice that - 14 hours a week.

However, students in Finland and Korea - which both score high in educational outcomes - spend less than three hours a week on homework.

The PISA report also found that students from wealthier backgrounds spend more time doing homework than disadvantaged students.
