Two viable improvised explosive devices have been made safe in Co Mayo.

Members of the Army Bomb Disposal Team were deployed at around 1pm this afternoon, after they were alerted to two suspect devices, in the Moneen area of Castlebar.

The area was cordoned off and a number of nearby buildings were evacuated.

The devices were made safe at the scene without the need for a controlled explosion.

They were taken away for further examination and the scene was declared safe at 2pm.

Gardaí are investigating.
