Group calls for more resources to tackle bicycle thefts

The Dublin Cycling Campaign has today called for tougher measures to combat the increasing number of bicycle thefts.

It is estimated around 20,000 bikes – worth a total of about €10m – are stolen in Dublin alone every year.

The number of bikes being taken has doubled since the Bike to Work Scheme was launched in 2009, according to the Dublin Cycling Campaign.

Across the country, more than 5,000 bikes are reported stolen to Gardaí, but only around 1% of those reports lead to a conviction.

Spokesperson David Timoney said that a multi-agency group should be put together to tackle the crime.
