Woman sues for being allegedly trampled by horse at showjumping event

A horse trainer and producer, who was paralysed after she was allegedly trampled on by an out-of-control horse at a showjumping event, is giving evidence in the High Court.
Deirdre Bourns of Lisbeg Farms, Eyrecourt, Co Galway is suing the Showjumping Association of Ireland; Cavan Equestrian Centre; and its owner and horserider, Hayley Dunne of Old Graigue, Maynooth, Co Kildare.
Deirdre Bourns claims she was knocked from behind by an out-of-control, four-year-old horse called Ms Red at a Showjumping event in September 2012.
She has told the High Court she was warming up one of her horses before the event when she felt a very sudden impact.
She gave evidence her next memory is of being comforted on the side of the practice ring and realising she was not able to move her legs.
The 59-year-old, who is now in a wheelchair, said her most awful recollection was arriving at the Mater Hospital in Dublin and seeing the words 'Spinal Unit' on the door.
She is suing for damages of more than €1.5m alleging numerous safety deficiencies on the day of the showjumping event - claims that are denied.
