Counting underway in Seanad by-election

Counting is underway in the Seanad by-election and Fine Gael's John McNulty is expected to win the seat, and resign amid controversy over his nomination.

A result is expected later this afternoon.

Last week he effectively withdrew from the race by calling on the TDs and Senators who have a vote not to vote for him - but the ballot papers were already printed with his name and some were even returned.

If he does not win the seat, it is likely to go to the independent candidate Gerard Craughwell, who has the backing of Fianna Fáil.
