Teachers 'don’t want to judge Leaving results for students they know well'

Teachers are defending their decision to vote in favour of strike action.

ASTI members have opted to extend the industrial action that was been sparked by plans to reform the Junior Cert.

They are blaming a lack of training in advance of the changes, and are also objecting to the idea of marking their own students' state exams.

Teacher in Scoil Mhuire in Carrick-on-Suir in Co Tipperary Fintan O'Mahony said: "Knowing them as well as you do after three years of senior cycle, you're not going to be able to separate what you know about them from what they do in an exam.

"I don't want to be judging the students' Leaving Cert results on the basis of what I know about them and their backgrounds."
