University rankings place eight Irish institutions in top 1,000

Eight Irish universities appear on a list of the world's top 1,000 third-level institutions.

The Centre for World University Rankings include eight US and two British colleges in the top 10, with Harvard at number one.

Trinity is the Irish college closest to the top at number 200.

UCD is at 269, UCC comes in at 463 and NUI Galway is 600th.

The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland comes in at 64 while, DCU and Maynooth are 819 and 820 respectively.

The University of Limerick completes the number of Irish entries at 944.
