Shatter indicates he may appeal ruling of data-protection law breach

Alan Shatter has indicated he will consider appealing a ruling that he broke data protection law by disclosing personal information about Independent TD Mick Wallace.

The Data Protection Commissioner found that the Minister for Justice broke the law last year by revealing that the independent TD had been cautioned for using his mobile phone while driving.

The finding does not indicate any criminal charges, but may leave the Minister liable to a claim for damages from Deputy Wallace.

Alan Shatter has 21 days to appeal the ruling.

In a statement this evening Mr Shatter said he was examining the decision closely with a view to taking "appropriate further legal steps as may be advised".
