Fianna Fáil delegates reject motion calling for powers to shut down social media sites

Delegates at the Fianna Fáil Ard Fheis have rejected a motion to allow social media websites to be shut down.

Delegates had been asked to consider changes in the law so that sites could be blocked if they led to the death of a user.

The plan was put forward as a response to cyber bullying, but was easily defeated.

Members also voted against plans to raise the minimum age for buying alcohol in an off-licence to 21, but approved plans for a special financial criminal court.
