Employers criticise lack of additional language skills in Ireland

Employers at the Jobs Expo in Dublin have said there is a language skills shortage among Irish jobseekers.

Dozens of companies from Ireland and abroad are advertising 15,000 positions at the event in Croke Park.

Over 10,000 are expected to attend the expo between now and tomorrow afternoon.

Anthony Howley is part of a group recruiting 250 builders in Switzerland. He noted there needs to be more investment in language teaching.

Howley said: “To be quite honest I find it an absolute disgrace with relation to languages in Ireland.

“Languages should be taught from an earlier age in my opinion. Once you go outside of the greater Dublin area the availability of language courses are extremely limited.”
