A 23-year-old Galway man has died after an alleged assault in Australia two weeks ago.

Thomas Keaney from Ballyconneely, Co Galway died following an alleged assault outside Euro Kebab on Aberdeen Street in Northbridge, Perth.

The incident happened in the early hours of December 17.

Mr Keaney had been standing behind a taxi when he was allegedly struck, causing him to fall and hit his head off the kerb.

He was taken to hospital in a critical condition and his parents travelled to Australia to be at their son's bedside. Keaney subsequently lost his fight for life.

A 22-year-old man, Abbas Al Jrood, has appeared at Perth Magistrates Court facing charges of grievous bodily harm.

Mr Al Jrood did not apply for bail and will be held in custody until January 13 when he will appear via video link.
