A 42-year-old man has died after the car he was driving hit a bridge.

A 42-year-old man has died after the car he was driving hit a bridge.

The single-vehicle smash happened on the N9 at Knockwilliam, Ballyhale, Co Kilkenny at about 9.15pm last night.

The man was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital where a full post-mortem examination will be carried out tomorrow.

The vehicle was travelling on the N9 from Ballyhale in the direction of Mullinavat.

The road is currently closed to facilitate an examination by Garda forensic collision investigators and diversions have been put in place.

Gardaí investigating the cause of the crash have appealed for any witnesses to make contact.
