A post office robber who held a knife to the throat of a customer and threatened to slit her throat while on bail has had his sentence increased.

Ian Stewart of Moynihan Court, Tallaght, was jailed for three years for the Firhouse raid in January 2010 and for snatching a woman’s handbag at an ATM machine, three months earlier.

The Court of Criminal Appeal has found the sentence unduly lenient and increased it to a total of seven years.

However, the 36-year-old will still only serve three years in prison as the final four years have been suspended to acknowledge his commitment to drug rehabilitation.
