The mother of a girl who died in a house fire last night reportedly discovered the blaze after returning from a night out.

An investigation is underway this afternoon after a 9 year-old girl and a woman in her 80's died in a house fire in county Wexford.

Emergency services were called to the scene at a house in the rural area of Clohass near Enniscorthy just after midnight.

The bodies of the little girl and the woman, were taken to the Waterford Regional Hospital where a post mortem examination will take place today.

A man in his 50s was taken to Saint Vincent's Hospital in Dublin for treatment for his injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

Gardaí have preserved the scene while they carry out a technical examination.

Fianna Fáil TD John Browne said there is a huge amount of shock and sadness in the area today.
