Lynn extradition could take up to a year

It is thought it could take up to a year for the fugitive solicitor Michael Lynn to be extradited back to Ireland from Brazil.

The 43-year-old fled Ireland six years ago and owes several financial institutions here more than €80m.

He was arrested in the Pernambuco region of Brazil on Thursday - and is currently in police custody.

His arrest and extradition warrant came about - thanks to a reciprocal arrangement reached between Brazil and Ireland.

Journalist Sarah O'Sullivan who is in Brazil said the judicial system there can be very slow and arduous.

"It is expected that preliminary hearing will probably be held in the next ten days," she said.

"It quite a high judge in the Supreme court that signed the order to have him arrested so he will be seeking legal advise now to see how they will next proceed."
