Doctor's group meeting HSE over 36-hour shifts

The Irish Medical Organisation will meet the HSE today to discuss working hours.

The union representing junior doctors is warning that patient care could suffer because of lengthy shifts.

It has been balloting members over whether to step up its campaign to end the current system, which sees many working for up to 100 hours a week.

They are now calling on the health authority to ensure shifts are no longer than 24 hours.

Assistant Director of Industrial Relations with the IMO, Eric Young, said tired doctors could compromise patient care.

"Patient's safety is the primary focus of this," he said. "Nobody wants to be treated by a doctor who's been on their feet in excess of 24 hours, and up to 36 hours in many of the hospitals on a daily basis across the health system.

"It is only a matter of time before a serious incident takes place."
