NI police 'found explosive components' in woman's car, court hears

Components of an improvised explosive were seized from the car of a woman charged with terrorism offences in the North, a court has heard.

Firing mechanisms and remote signalling equipment were discovered in an empty oil container in the vehicle after Nuala Gormley was stopped by police in Mid Ulster on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old, from Morgan Park in Dromore, Co Tyrone, admitted her support for republicanism and had republican memorabilia in her home, police said.

A detective constable told Dungannon Magistrates’ Court: “Provisional examination by Forensic Science Northern Ireland, indications suggest that the relevant items seized are the component parts of an improvised explosive device.”

Gormley was stopped in Drum Road in Cookstown, Co Tyrone, without a phone or handbag.

The detective added: “She did have gloves, wellington boots and two coats.”
