O'Reilly: Ireland failing to realise potential

New European Ombudsman Emily O'Reilly says we operate to a 'C standard' here in Ireland, in our work, and in our engagement.

She was explaining comments she made over the weekend at the MacGill Summer School in Co Donegal, when she described the modern day republic as a 'perversion of 1916 ideals'.

This morning, Ms. O'Reilly has clarified that she was speaking about recent history, and not only the current government.

But she again criticised our laziness, stating that we are a gifted and wealthy nation, but we don't realise our potential:

"It is my view that we operate at a 'C standard' a lot of the time, in a lot of areas, and we could be doing so much better.

Ms O'Reilly said that in her weekend speech she was "trying to challenge all of us to do better, given the great gifts and riches that we still enjoy."
