Calls are being made for the Government and the Central Bank to freeze the remaining €25bn of Anglo bonds and not to sell them to the market.

The Anglo: Not Our Debt group says this debt should be written off - and are staging an event this morning outside the Central Bank to highlight their concerns.

"We understand the Irish Central Bank is preparing to sell on these bonds on domestic and international markets," said Nessa Ní Chasaide spokesperson for the group.

"This would worsen Ireland's situation because it would lock us further into repaying these debts to domestic and international commercial players

"So we are calling on the Minister for Finance to freeze the sale of these bonds and for the Irish Government to immediately negotiate a full and immediate write down of this illegitimate debt
