A Roscommon community is in shock after a 19 year old man drowned in a popular local swimming spot, in the fourth such incident this week.

The young man disappeared at Drinaun Lake near Strokestown at around 8pm yesterday evening.

Gardaí and the Coastguard launched a search and his body was found around midnight.

A post mortem will also be carried out today on the body of a 10 year old boy who drowned in Youghal in Co Cork yesterday.

On Wednesday, a 17 year old boy drowned in a lake in Celbridge in Co Kildare, and a 21 year old woman drowned in Abbeyfeale in Limerick on Tuesday night.

Local Councillor Tom Crosbie in Roscommon says the 19 year old was swimming with a group of friends in a lake that's well known for bathing:

"It's been renowned for being a safe place for people to swim over the years," he said.

"They were swimming across to a small island off the lake. I understand that they turned to come back … the young man got into difficulty."
