Survivors of Symphysiotomy call for €250k - €450k compensation

The Survivors of Symphysiotomy group is calling on the Government to put forward a compensation fund of between €250,000 and €450,000 for each woman.

Symphysiotomy surgeries were carried out on women at childbirth - their pelvis was broken, often without their consent, and most women suffered long term health problems as a result.

The Government has commissioned a report into the practice - which is expected to be published tomorrow.

The survivor's group says the Walsh report does not go far enough, and the compensation scheme on offer will not be adequate.

Survivor Vera McCarla from Castleblaney in Co Monaghan says above all else, she and her son want justice.

"He used to say to me, 'it's for the justice of it, mammy,'" she said.

"Sure, who refuses money? But it's for the justice of it, it was the way you were treated all along."
