Two dead, two seriously injured after road collisions

Two people have died and two other men are in a critical condition in hospital this morning, after road crashes yesterday in counties Kildare and Kerry.

It comes as gardaí appeal to motorists to take extra care on the roads over the June Bank Holiday weekend.

The first serious crash happened at about 2.30pm yesterday afternoon, near Athy in Co Kildare.

Two people died in that accident - one of the victims was a male motorcyclist in his late 20s, the other was a woman in her 80s, who was a passenger in the car.

The driver of the car, a man in his 80s, was taken to hospital.

He is seriously ill, and is being treated at Naas General Hospital.

It is understood the man and woman in the car were a couple.

Elsewhere, a man in his 30s is being treated at Tralee General Hospital after a second crash in Co. Kerry.

The single vehicle collision happened on the Beaufort to Killorglin road just before 8pm yesterday evening.

Meanwhile, the Road Safety Authority is urging motorist to reduce their speed, buckle their seatbelts, and never ever travel in a car with a driver who has consumed alcohol or drugs.
