No bail for man charged in connection with shooting of dissident republican

The High Court has refused a bail application brought by a man charged in connection with the fatal shooting of dissident republican Peter Butterly in Co Meath in March.

Butterly, a 35-year-old father-of-two was shot dead in the car park of the Huntsman Inn at Gormanston, on March 6th.

Dean Evans (aged 22), of Grange Park Rise, Raheny was among three men charged in connection with the shooting at a special weekend sitting of the non-jury court.

Mr Evans and his co-accused Edward Mc Grath (aged 31), of Land Dale Lawns, Springfield, Tallaght, are each charged with the unlawful possession of a 9mm calibre Beretta model 9000s semi-automatic pistol and seven rounds of ammunition with intent to endanger life at the car park of The Huntsman Inn, Gormanston, Co Meath on March 6, 2013.

They are also each charged with membership of an illegal organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Oglaigh na hÉireann on the same date.

David Cullen (aged 28), of Brackenwood Ave, Balbriggan, is charged with the unlawful possession of a 9mm calibre Beretta model 9000s semi-automatic pistol at Gormanston, Co Meath on March 6.

Mr Justice Michael Hanna today said the court would refuse the bail application brought by counsel for the accused man, Mr Philipp Rahn BL.

Mr Evans was remanded in custody to appear before the Special Criminal Court on June 11.
