Nurses and midwives expected to approve industrial action

Nurses and midwives are expected to pass an emergency motion for industrial action today, which will include the withdrawal of labour.

The issue is top of the agenda on the second day of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation annual conference.

The INMO motion is part of a public sector-wide campaign against a Government threat to cut the pay of nurses, midwives and other public servants following the rejection of Croke Park 2.

General secretary of the INMO, Liam Doran, said that he hopes the Labour Relations Commission can achieve an agreeable settlement for all.

"We're still asking the Government to listen and hear and understand that its employees have given a resounding no to the Croke Park 2 proposals,

"We recognise they have financial difficulties, but the way to solve them isn't to impose a third wave of pay cuts on people who have already had their pay cut by 14% in the last three-and-a-half years."
