Ten-year-old boy with cerebral palsy wins €1.5m court case against hospital

A ten-year-old boy with cerebral palsy from birth is to be paid more than €1.5m under a High Court settlement with the Coombe Hospital in Dublin.

Jamie Patterson sued the hospital through his mother, Teresa Patterson, from Galtymore Park in Drimnagh.

In her legal action it was claimed that the dosage of Syntocinon she was given to help induce labour on November 3, 2003, caused over-stimulation of the womb and allegedly deprived the unborn baby of oxygen.

The court heard 10-year-old Jamie has cerebral palsy and cannot speak or sign.

His mother - a former hairdresser - has now trained as a carer to look after her son.

The €1.5m settlement is not a final one, his care needs will be reviewed again in two years' time.

Liability was not admitted.
