Avon withdraws from Irish market with immediate effect

Avon have ceased trading in Ireland with immediate effect as part of a worldwide cost-cutting initiative.

Business developers and representatives were told via conference call this morning that the company is to withdraw from the Irish market, but were given no further details.

They were told an email would be sent to all representatives later, outlining full details of the withdrawal, but one rep told BreakingNews.ie that they have been 'left in the lurch' and were 'given no previous indication'.

Around 400 people work for Avon across the country.

The Irish branch of the Avon website has been taken down and replaced with a statement which reads: "Avon Cosmetics Ltd ceased trading in the Republic of Ireland on Monday 8th April 2013.

"If you are a Customer in the Republic of Ireland and have questions, please contact your Representative.

"If you are a Representative in the Republic of Ireland and have questions, please contact your Business Developer.

"If you are a Business Developer, please refer to the e-mail you have been sent from Avon."

While information to employees has been sparse, a statement from the company's US headquarters, published on their website, read: "The latest actions include a global headcount reduction of more than 400 associates across all regions and functions, and the restructuring or closure of certain smaller, underperforming markets, primarily in Europe, Middle East & Africa, including the exit of the Republic of Ireland market.

"These actions, like those previously announced, are aimed at boosting efficiencies and concentrating resources on high priority markets and activities. The company expects these actions to be largely completed before the end of 2013."

Avon is seeking global savings of $400m (€307m) between now and 2016.

"We continue to work aggressively toward turning around the business," said Avon Chief Executive Officer Sheri McCoy. "The steps outlined today take us closer to our cost-savings goal. At the same time, we remain focused on continuing to streamline the business and driving top-line growth."
