Taoiseach: Cabinet 'has not considered' action on Child Benefit

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has said the Government has not considered anything in relation to Child Benefit.

It follows reports that an advisory group has recommended a cut of by €40 to €100 per month per child.

The report was compiled for the Social Protection Minister Joan Burton ahead of December's Budget.

Speaking on his way into Government Buildings this morning, Mr Kenny said nothing has been considered yet.

The Taoiseach said: "The Government haven't considered anything to do with Child Benefit.

"I have read the comments about the reports. The Minister for Social Protection, as part of the budgetary policy, will bring her views to Cabinet in due course."

Meanwhile, the Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney has said the Government needs to consider if it is fair for high income earners to get the same Child Benefit as lower income families.

Mr Coveney said the matter has yet to be discussed by the Cabinet, but he believes Child Benefit should go to families who need it the most.
