Gardaí release man in connection with Cork death

Gardaí are to prepare a file for the DPP after last night releasing without charge a man arrested for questioning about the death of a father of two in Cork.

Detectives arrested the 23-year-old man yesterday morning when he presented at the Bridewell Garda Station.

Officers began questioning the man about an assault on Cork City Council employee, Patsy Deasy from McGrath Park in Blackrock.

He had been attending a 60th birthday party with his wife at the Red Cove Inn in Mahon when he was attacked in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Gardai believe the 57-year old was punched or struck and fell to the ground, hitting his head and losing consciousness.

He was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery but he was pronounced dead on Monday.

A man from the Mahon area was arrested for questioning but was released without charge at midnight last night and a file is being prepared for the DPP.
