The Taoiseach Enda Kenny will be in Co Mayo this evening to launch a new pilot programme for sufferers of Dementia.
The aim of 'Community Action on Dementia in Mayo' is to keep people with the disease out of institutional care and in their own homes.
The project is funded by the HSE and supported by Genio, a charity which works to make a positive impact on the lives of those marginalised by society.
Hugh Kane of Genio explains what the project is all about: "There's a couple of pieces to it. There's trying to develop different ways to respond to people who have dementia. Looking at how we might support them at home with respite in their home rather than out of it.
"We're going to pilot a memory assessment clinic in the community rather than in hospital. When people are diagnosed we're going to support them immediately after diagnosis to help them deal with the shock of that."
