Kenny: Michaela verdict 'unsatisfactory'

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has said that the acquittal of two men for the killing of Michaela McAreavey in Mauritius has been "wholly unsatisfactory and of devastating grief" to the family.

Speaking in Dublin this morning the Taoiseach described how his thoughts are with the McAreavey and Harte families, and that he was "absolutely heartbroken" for them.

"This is utter devastation for them," he said.

"I noted the words of the (Mauritian) prime minister, that justice would be done and would be seen to be done.

"Clearly it hasn't been done."

Mr Kenny said the Cabinet will consider using diplomatic channels to have the case re-examined.

"The Government will reflect on it," he said.

However he said that the Government does not interfere in the legal processes of other countries.

Despite this, he added, "the outcome has been wholly unsatisfactory".

The Taoiseach said that on behalf of the Irish people he wants to empathise with the McAreavey and Harte families, with the depth of their grief and with their sense of injustice.
