Wallace set to face further investigation

The Dáil's committee on members interests looks set to launch further inquiries into the tax affairs of Independent TD Mick Wallace.

The Dáil's committee on members interests looks set to launch further inquiries into the tax affairs of Independent TD Mick Wallace.

The move is likely to have to put any planned motion of censure in the Wexford TD on hold.

The Committee on Members' Interests met this afternoon after Mr Wallace's case was referred to it.

That meeting is now over and the committee is expected to issue a formal statement soon.

It is understood that the committee is to write to Deputy Wallace and ask him to explain his situation.

It will also seek permission from Deputy Wallace to request the Revenue Commissioners to disclose the timeline of their involvement in his case.

The committee will also seek further legal advice on what powers it has to investigate.

Earlier, Taoiseach Enda Kenny promised the Government would make a "clear decision" following the meeting of the committee, but with further inquiries it is unlikely that a censure motion can be held in the Dáil.
