IFA calls for flood prevention system along river Shannon

The Irish Farmers Association is calling for a flood prevention system to be created along the river Shannon.

The organisation said that levels are rising by 2 inches an hour due to the bad weather.

Gates have been put in place to control water levels - however they argue the group responsible for opening them did so too late this week.

Chair of the IFA's committee responsible for flood Prevention Michael Silke said that there is a laid back approach to flood prevention in this region.

However Waterways Ireland disagrees.

It has said that the organisation continuously monitors water levels and takes immediate action.
