SF challenge Noonan to debate referendum costs

Sinn Féin are challenging the Finance Minister to disclose the cost of a yes vote in the Fiscal Treaty referendum.

The challenge comes after Michael Noonan rejected Sinn Féin's claim that a yes vote would lead to an additional €6bn in austerity measures after 2015.

The party's finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty claimed the Government would cut services or increase taxes to bridge the deficit.

The Donegal South West TD called on Minister Noonan to a debate on the figures prior to the May 31 referendum.

"Let the Minister for Finance, if he disputes our costs, produce his own figures and let's have a debate on them," said Deputy Doherty.

"The Irish people deserve an upfront answer from the Irish Government as to what will actually happen post-2015 if this austerity treaty is passed. We in Sinn Féin are clear that it will result in an additional €6bn in austerity measures."
