Committee pushes for ban on alcohol sales in supermarkets

An Oireachtas Committee is calling for an outright ban on the sale of alcohol in certain outlets, including supermarkets and garages.

A report into the misuse of alcohol and other drugs by the Committee on Health and Children is also seeking a greater restriction on the advertising of drink.

It recommends bans on alcohol adverts on television before 9pm at night and on social networking websites.

The members of the Committee on Health and Children are also critical of the below-cost selling of alcohol, which the report says is driving the problem of alcohol misuse.
