Students at Sligo IT have designed a road safety device aimed at reducing deaths by monitoring erratic driver behaviour.

Those behind the invention say it has a computer game-style attraction which could encourage drivers to "beat the technology" by driving safely.

When the device is plugged into a vehicle's engine, it relays information about the way the vehicle is being driven firstly to a phone app, then to a cloud computing platform. Motorists are alerted to any dangerous or erratic driving they engage in.

It is expected to be on the market before the end of the year, at a cost of up to €150.
