Gardaí are advising motorists to drive with caution this evening as icy conditions continue to persist on many roads throughout the country.

Secondary roads in counties Kildare, Meath, Westmeath, Wicklow and Louth are said to be particularly dangerous.

Met Eireann warned the cold snap is set to get worse this weekend with overnight temperatures dipping to -4C in places.

Forecaster with Met Eireann Harem Loeks said that through would be wintry showers tonight, especially in bnorthern areas and in west Munster, but that the snow would not remain.

He said milder conditions would follow next week.
