Independent Donegal TD Thomas Pringle is calling on the public not to pay the new €100 household charge or any charges for septic tanks.

Independent Donegal TD Thomas Pringle is calling on the public not to pay the new €100 household charge or any charges for septic tanks.

The Deputy said that he will not register for the household tax, nor will he pay it.

The charge, which comes into effect in January, is expected to raise €160m for the Government next year.

While he is not liable for it himself, Deputy Pringle has told Highland Radio that people should not pay proposed septic-tank charges either.

"Many people … have said to me that they can't afford to pay this, and I have solidarity with them," he stated.

"I won't be registering and won't be household tax either because I think people need to resist this tax, and they need to resist the austerity that is being forced on people for the last three years as well."

"For my own situation, I'm not liable for the septic tank charge, but if I was, I wouldn't be registering and I wouldn't be paying."
