Homeowners affected by pyrite to outline case to Govt

Homeowners whose houses have been affected by pyrite will today outline their concerns to the Oireachtas environment committee.

It is estimated as many as 20,000 houses were built using the substance which causes foundations and walls to swell and crack.

Homebond - which provided insurance to the developers who built the houses - says it is not liable to pay compensation to people who bought the homes.

The government has set up a working group in an attempt to bring all parties together to find a resolution to the issue.

The Pyrite Action Group, which represents homeowners in the dispute, will today call on the Government to take a leading role in the negotiations.

"We want the Government to challenge the stance taken by Homebond. Their legal position is purely that, a legal position. It hasn't been tried or tested in court and we would love to see that being tested," he said.
