Kelly: Govt considering new toll charges on Irish roads

The Junior Transport Minister Alan Kelly has confirmed that further toll charges on Irish roads are being considered.

The National Roads Authority is hiring consultants to look at introducing new charges on eight roads in Ireland.

The Jack Lynch Tunnel in Cork may be hit with a toll as well as Dublin's M50, which could see a charge for every section that you travel on.

By-passes in Dundalk, Tuam, Arklow and Ennis are also being considered under the plan.

Mr Kelly said the plan is being considered by Government: "Nothing is set in stone…it will be a few years before any of these tolls will be implemented.

"Having said that; it is a serious option.

"We are going to have a look at it and how we can administer that in a fair way if we make a decision to bring in those tolls."
