In Galway, a 42-year-old man died after he was knocked down in Co Galway. It happened at Ballinahowen, three miles west of Barna, on the Galway to Spiddal road at 1.30am today.

The driver of the car, a 19-year-old man, escaped injury in the crash.

Meanwhile, a 40-year-old man has lost his life in a crash in Co Wexford.

The single-vehicle collision happened at 12.05am at Ballyellen between Arklow and Gorey, on the southbound side of the M11.

The dead man was a passenger in the car. Two other men in their 30s suffered minor injures, and one of them was taken to St Vincent's hospital in Dublin before he was released later.

Forensic examinations of the scene are underway and the M11 is currently closed between exit 21 and exit 22.

Gardaí at Gorey are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward.
