Taoiseach denies decision made on Sunday premium pay

The Taoiseach has denied that any decision has been made by the Government to cut Sunday premium pay.

The Minister for Enterprise and Jobs announced plans last night to reform the mechanisms used to set the wage rates, which could also include a change to overtime pay.

The move would impact on up to 200,000 low-paid workers, who is come cases receive double time on a Sunday.

However Enda Kenny said a consultative process on the issue is only just beginning.

Under the proposals put forward by Jobs and Enterprise Minister Richard Bruton, people who work in sectors such as retail and hospitality could see their current entitlement to a special Sunday premium pay rate dropped.

Richard Bruton said the measures would help to save and create jobs.

"25% of jobs and more have gone in these sectors. The challenge is to protect people's jobs and give an opportunity to create new jobs," he said.

Employer bodies are welcoming the proposals, with trade unions raising concerns.
