Dublin has received a job boost today with Greyhound Recycling and Recovery announcing 112 new posts, to come on stream as a result of a Government announcement to increase the landfill levy to €75 euro per tonne by July 2013.

The jobs will be based at Clondalkin and Ballymount, and is set to recruitment will get underway immediately.

Greyhound, which is Ireland’s largest recycling company, welcomed the announcement by Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Phil Hogan, T.D. that the landfill levy will rise from €30 per tonne to €50 per tonne from September 1 2011, to €65 per tonne from July 2012 and to €75 per tonne from July 2013.

The company, which currently employs 250 staff, will immediately start recruiting 50 new staff to be employed in Clondalkin and Ballymount from September 1 2011. An additional 37 new jobs will be created in July 2012 together with 25 new jobs in July 2013 as the increases to the landfill levy take effect.

“We are delighted that the new Government has recognised the potential to create new jobs by diverting waste from landfill to recycling and recovery,” said Michael Buckley co-founder and joint CEO of Greyhound Recycling and Recovery.

“Minister Hogan has clearly listened to our case that 250 new jobs can be created for every 10,000 tonnes of waste diverted from landfill and we welcome his acceptance that the current position of disposing of waste through landfill is no longer sustainable.

“The succession of landfill levy increases announced today unlock the potential to create new jobs in the green economy and to achieve real change in the way that the country manages waste while also bringing clarity and certainty to the waste management sector."
