Leona Maguire unburdened by expectations ahead of another Irish Open tilt

Leona Maguire remains the face of women’s golf in Ireland but the Cavan star insists she will not be burdened by home expectations as she leads a record home field of 16 golfers at this week’s KPMG Irish Open at the K Club.

This will be her ninth time teeing up at her national tournament and her best result in the four hostings since it was revived as a concept in 2022 has been a tie for fourth at Dromoland Castle that very year.

Like Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry and Padraig Harrington when it comes to the men’s equivalent in recent times, all eyes will be on the 31-year old Maguire when she gets her week started at the tenth hole at 8.18am on Thursday morning.

“Definitely the first two years I was probably quite overwhelmed and that maybe detracted a little bit from practice and preparation,” she said at the pre-tournament press conference at the Kildare venue on Tuesday afternoon.

“I was fortunate enough being attached here to the K Club. I've been able to come a few times and play the course a few times so that this week isn't quite as stressful and hectic.

“And also just have patience and understanding that there will be a lot of demands on my time this week. I know there will be and (it will be important) not getting frustrated when things pop up last minute and just trying to embrace it as well.” 

Maguire comes home for this event in the midst of a major swing rebuild and change of coach that has resulted in a dip in fortunes in 2026. She has missed cuts in half of the 20 events played this calendar year, including four of the five women’s majors.

That form wasn’t enough to dissuade Europea’s Solheim Cup captain Anna Norqvist from using her as one of four wildcards for the meetings with the USA in the Netherlands next month, but the hope will be that something more can click this week.

Either way, Maguire is calm about what is to come.

“Signing all the autographs and taking all the pictures and all of that, just learning to embrace it for what it is, not really going into this week with any major expectations and just trying to play as well as I can and see what happens.”
