No verdict yet in Geoghegan murder trial

The jury in the trial of a Dublin man accused of murdering Limerick rugby player Shane Geoghegan has gone home after a second day of deliberations.

Barry Doyle with an address at Portland Row, denies the murder of the 28-year-old at Clonmore, Kilteragh on November 9, 2008.

The jury has gone home this evening after a total of eight hours of deliberations.

Earlier this afternoon, the foreman asked the trial judge: "What level of involvement would constitute murder, to which Mr Justice Paul Carney replied: "The State says Barry Doyle is the gunman, how involved can you get?".

Shane Geoghegan was shot five times near his home in Clonmore in a suspected case of mistaken identity.

The trial has heard in garda interviews following his arrest in February 2009 Barry Doyle admitted the shooting and handed detectives rosary beads to give to Shane Geoghegan’s parents.

The defence have argued the confession was a result of psychological pressure by detectives.

The jury which has the option of returning a majority verdict will start a third day of deliberations tomorrow morning.
