Murder victim was warned by garda about young people at house

A murder trial has heard a 50-year-old man allegedly shot dead by a Dublin teenager had been warned by a garda that it was inappropriate to allow young people spend time at his house.

Conor Duffy (aged 18) of St Mary's Road, East Wall denies murdering Aidan O'Kane in a laneway off Bargy Road in the East Wall area on Sunday December 7, 2008.

The jury heard that there was a cry of ‘he’s got a gun’ as Aidan O’Kane came out masked and with a baton to confront teenagers who had thrown eggs at his house.

His son Dylan has given evidence that his father had been tormented for months but also agreed he used to allow large numbers of teenagers come over to his house where they would fix up bikes and take drugs.

Today a community garda for the East Wall area said he had warned Aidan O’Kane following complaints from neighbours that it was inappropriate for young people to be spending time at his house.

Garda Paddy Maguire said he first met the 50-year-old when he pretended to be a young boy’s father to secure the release of a bike from Store Street Garda Station.

Asked about criminal feuding in nearby Sheriff Street in 2008 he said people from there began hanging out in East Wall but could not say if a concentrated police presence had resulted in the movement of drugs and weapons from the area.
